Hello, I’m Matthew B. Parker the designer of HammerOn. I was diagnosed with Stage IIIB male breast cancer in October 2018. I received my treatment at the John Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. At the conclusion of my 278 days of treatment of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation I felt compelled to give back, to share my positive experience, give hope and be a resource to other patients.
The “HammerOn” idea was born from my childhood memories of repairing fences with my dad; from beyond board and nails to a work ethic instilled in me to keep getting up and hammering on. To bring the idea to life, I began sketching out two hammers combined together forming a heart between the hammer’s heads. Family and friends soon heard my cancer story and echoed the phrase HammerOn. A few weeks into treatment, one of my cousins gave me a sentimental gift. A ball peen hammer belonging to our grandfather and a framing hammer belonging to his dad were used to hammer on metal and wood. These two hammers cemented the idea and became the symbol of the generations before me brought together to help HammerOn through cancer. The blue hammers and pink heart of the HammerOn logo represent the men and women who will be diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
